Tonight’s the night and I’m excited. Halloween has been a bit subdued around here since COVID… but decorations are happening in the neighborhood again. I’m hoping for a a huge crowd of cute kids and pre-teens :).

Getting a good trick or treat crowd is all about the marketing… here’s some questions to ask yourself ….

1. Do your customers know you are open for business?
Just like a house needs to signal that it’s participating in trick or treating (lights on, decorations, etc.), businesses need to make it clear that they’re open and ready for customers. In the online marketing world — this is all about making offers in different places, It’s good to give value — but people need to also know how they can work with you.

2. What is your business model?
Candy is given out based on the volume of trick or treaters. If there are many houses and many trick or treaters, less candy is given per house. If there are fewer houses, each kid has to walk further, but they get more candy per house. Similarly, online business owners need to understand whether they are serving a few people or many and tailor their offer accordingly.

3. Are you offering good value?
At the end of the day, trick or treaters are there for the candy. The houses that offer the best treats are the ones that get remembered. In the same way, the most successful businesses offer good value to their clients.

4. Can you create an experience?
The houses that go all out with decorations and make trick or treating an event are the ones that kids remember. Similarly, businesses that provide an exceptional customer experience will stand out from the competition.

5. Are you encouraging referrals or word of mouth?
Just as kids will share info about which houses have the best candy, customers will share their experiences with businesses. Positive word of mouth can be a powerful marketing tool.

Here’s hoping you get a good crowd of kids, if that’s what you want. Or, you manage to effectively turn out the lights and enjoy a seasonal Pumpkin Spice Latte… either way enjoy your Halloween.
